As of the first week of September, mortgage rates are sitting just below 6.3%. That puts them close to the 6% threshold many analysts believe could meaningfully boost buyer demand. But as we’ve seen in recent years, interest rates can change direction quickly—and sometimes dramatically. At the same time, stock markets just reached all-time highs, inflation data remains mixed, consumer confidence is still low, and the latest jobs report was less than encouraging.
Most experts expect the Fed to cut its benchmark rate this month—the first cut in 2025—but much depends on upcoming inflation reports. If those numbers trend in the right direction, we could see stronger momentum as we head deeper into fall.
